Factory of the Dead

During my recent trip to Paris I was fortunate enough to meet and spend the day taking pictures and talking with my photo blogging friend Owen. Owen as I mentioned before is from Pennsylvania but now lives near Paris. He also happens to have a really cool blog. I took this ominous shot in Père Lachaise cemetery. It reminds me of an old factory but Owen informed me that this is the crematorium, hence my title. The rain had just started when I took this picture and I remember thinking that dark clouds just might enhance the dramatic look of the building.

  3. Well, it really looks like some kind of factory James.
And the B&W gives a dramatic note to the photograph.

  4. Reminds me of a rather dark and brooding shot I took of the ossuary in the cemetery at Verdun.

  7. At first sight the picture made me think of Metropolis. Then , after reading your text, I thought of "Soylent green" with Charlton Heston.. something having to do with a dark world, a sinister future..Very impressive shot!

  8. You're certainly right about the effect. A very powerful shot. Gives me the creeps, very good in b&wh.

  9. Whoa. What an imposing and almost menacing image, and that was before I read the caption! The symmetry, the choice of black and white, and the upward perspective all combine to create an extremely dramatic and otherworldly image.

  11. Awesome James, and a great title it too... it almost looks like the smokestacks are smoking, souls rising to heaven in a dark gray sky... The b&w makes this far more ominous than it would have been in color, simply dripping in atmosphere... I remember watching you concentrating on this one... well done, well done...

  12. The perspective really works on this with the dramatic sky above. The smokestacks do create a churning feeling in my stomach...heavy stuff.

  14. Perfect title for an imposing building to burn the dead. I imagine walking in the cemetery at dusk and having goose pimples at this sight. See what an overactive imagination can get you!

  15. Scary... it looks like a religious building. Your style of photographing it lends to the ominous look.

  16. Chilling image. Although the concept, or even reality, of cremation is just fine with me.
